Accessibility in the Twenty-First-Century Classroom

Classroom accessibility is of the utmost importance for the twenty-first-century student, classroom, and institution. As the population of students with disabilities continues to increase in higher education institutions, instructors should effectively utilize new media technologies. Instructors should recognize challenges faced by students with disabilities and, using the Universal Design model, strategically implement a classroom climate that engages students across the spectrum. This chapter will address the current landscape of accessibility challenges, discuss the potential of new media technologies as the classroom equalizer, and position new media pedagogy and digital tools as sound pedagogy prospective for equality in the higher education classroom.
